What is Product Sunset?
A product sunset is the planned retirement of a product or feature: deciding it no longer earns its place, then winding it down deliberately — notifying and migrating customers, honouring commitments, decommissioning systems and capturing lessons. A well-run sunset protects users and reputation; an abrupt one damages both.

A sunset has two distinct halves. The first is the decision: an honest assessment of whether the product's value, cost and strategic fit still justify investment, judged against alternatives for the same resources — declining usage, rising maintenance cost and strategic drift are the usual triggers. The second is the execution: a timeline with generous notice, a migration path or recommended alternative for remaining users, contractual and data obligations honoured, dependent systems untangled, and the freed capacity actually redeployed. The end state should be planned as carefully as a launch, because customers remember how a product died longer than how it lived.
Why it matters
Portfolios silt up: products that no longer earn their keep still consume engineering time, support attention, security patching and cognitive load, quietly taxing everything else the organisation wants to do. The ability to sunset well is what makes those resources recoverable. It is also a trust issue — customers and buyers judge a company by how it treats users of the products it retires, and a respectful wind-down preserves relationships that an overnight shutdown would destroy.
A product example
A company's legacy reporting module has dwindled to a small fraction of accounts while consuming an outsized share of maintenance effort, and its capabilities now exist in the newer analytics product. The team sets a twelve-month sunset: migration tooling and guides ship first, remaining users get scheduled export support, the retirement date is communicated three times, and the module is switched off on schedule — with two engineers' worth of capacity returned to the roadmap.
