What is Market Research Report?

A market research report is a structured summary of what a team has learned about a market: its size and growth, customer segments and needs, competitors, trends and risks. It consolidates primary and secondary research into an evidence base that informs strategy, prioritisation and investment decisions.

In more depth

A market research report brings together qualitative signals such as interviews, surveys and support themes with quantitative sources like market sizing and usage data, into one referenceable document. It distinguishes what is evidenced from what is assumed and cites its sources so claims can be checked. It is a living reference that later documents, such as strategy and business cases, draw their facts from.

Why it matters

Product decisions are only as good as the market understanding behind them, and that understanding is easily fragmented across people's heads and old decks. A shared, sourced report reduces the risk of teams acting on stale or anecdotal beliefs, and it makes it possible to reuse verified facts rather than re-researching them for every decision.

A product example

A fintech team's market research report sizes the UK SME lending market, segments customers by turnover, summarises five competitors' pricing, and cites twelve sources. A later business case reuses its market-size figures directly rather than re-deriving them from scratch.
